About us:
Our perennial interest in providing our family with certified safe, high quality organic food combined with 20 years in the hospitality industry provided the motivation. The knowledge that the folk in the community of Powell River are highly conscious of their health and diet provided us with the opportunity.
The result (created by Volker and Silke Pfeifer in 2006) is Silke's Organic Market Place.
Delivery to your doorstep:
Silke's buys Certified Organic produce from local farms both in BC and across Canada. When necessary, we also import some produce from warmer climates. This allows us to provide a nice, fresh variety of 100% certified products year-round.
We deliver Silke's 100%Certified Organic Products/Groceries direct to your doorstep, for free. Texada & Savary Island minimum order $80.
What is organic?
‘Organic’ refers to the way products are grown, processed and handled. Organic production eliminates the use of toxic agri-chemicals, helps replenish and maintain fertility of the soil, and helps to build biologically diverse agriculture.
Organic production does not allow the use of genetically engineered organisms or irradiation, nor does it allow the use of growth hormones and antibiotics.
‘Certified Organic’ means that a product has been produced, processed and handled according to strict organic standards. These include:
- Land on which organic food is grown must be free of prohibited substances for at least three years prior to certification.
- Farmers, processors and handlers must keep detailed records of methods and materials used in growing, processing and handling their products.
- An independent third-party certifier annually inspects all farms and facilities.
