What is organic?

‘Organic’ refers to the way products are grown, processed and handled. Organic production eliminates the use of toxic agri-chemicals, helps replenish and maintain fertility of the soil, and helps to build biologically diverse agriculture.

Organic production does not allow the use of genetically engineered organisms or irradiation, nor does it allow the use of growth hormones and antibiotics.

‘Certified Organic’ means that a product has been produced, processed and handled according to strict organic standards. These include:

  1. Land on which organic food is grown must be free of prohibited substances for at least three years prior to certification.
  2. Farmers, processors and handlers must keep detailed records of methods and materials used in growing, processing and handling their products.
  3. An independent third-party certifier annually inspects all farms and facilities.
